Six Important Things To Do After A Death

Many people have never had first hand experience of the loss of someone close, but may have attended a funeral of a relative, colleague or friend. When you suddenly lose someone close to you, you will be upset, feel that your whole life is in turmoil and you may be unable to decide what you need to do next. Here are six of the most important things you need to do from the moment of death to arranging the funeral.

  1. Call the doctor or paramedics as soon as possible to certify the death. If the death was sudden and you are not sure of the circumstances, it is wise to contact the Police as well. If a Locum doctor or the paramedics attended, a note will be handed to you to be given to the deceased's own doctor.
  2. Contact the funeral director to arrange conveyance of the deceased to their private Chapels of Rest.
  3. Collect the Medical Certificate of Cause Of Death from the deceased's doctor's surgery, if you have not already obtained this from the doctor certifying death. If the death was in hospital, contact the bereavement office to arrange collection of the certificate.
  4. Register the death at the local Registry Office where the death took place. Some Registrars have a booking system, so it is wise to telephone them first to make an appointment. A list of Registry Offices in and around Birmingham.
  5. Find the Will, as this may express any requests made for the funeral. Contact the deceased's solicitor to obtain a copy if you are unable to find it.
  6. Contact the funeral director to arrange a suitable time to call into their office to arrange the funeral. If H. M. Coroner is involved, a time for the funeral cannot be booked until the Coroner has completed his duties and given permission for the funeral to take place, but you will still be able to make prior arrangements for the funeral.
